The Labour Party has criticised the Opposition following comments made on the Government’s newly announced egg and sperm freezing service. It stated that the remarks by the Leader of the Opposition represent “a statement of a politician who lacks knowledge about the subject,” and argued that the Nationalist Party is attempting “to please everyone,” including former MP Edwin Vassallo and “PN’s de Facto Leader Adrian Delia,” whenever IVF or its expansion is discussed.
According to the statement, while the Opposition Leader claimed to support the initiative as part of the national health service, he then “began to find all the excuses to speak out against the initiative announced earlier this week.” The Labour Party emphasised that the service aims to improve Malta’s fertility rate, with eligibility reduced from 37 to 34 “as clinically proposed by professionals.”
The Government recently completed a €3.5 million refurbishment of the ART Clinic to enhance quality and expand operations. It noted that egg and sperm freezing is costly, but “a strong economy makes it possible for the Government to offer this service for free.”
The statement rejected Alex Borg’s claims, stressing ongoing cooperation with the private sector and expert advice supporting the age range of 18–34. It concluded that the PN “does not miss one chance to find every excuse to cast doubt” on IVF, despite having repeatedly voted against its expansion.
