Prime Minister Robert Abela has said that the Labour Government’s economic performance provides the strongest guarantee for Malta’s future, highlighting continued economic growth, job creation and financial stability during an interview with The Sunday Times of Malta.
Speaking to journalist Mark Laurence Zammit, Dr Abela said he was particularly proud that Malta continues to outperform every other European Union Member State in terms of employment and economic growth despite being the bloc’s smallest country. He attributed this success to what he described as responsible economic management and the Government’s decision to avoid austerity measures.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the Government will continue subsidising electricity, fuel and gas prices, stating that Malta has sufficient fiscal strength to maintain price stability.
Dr Abela also confirmed that the Government intends to publish legislation reforming planning appeals within the first 100 days of the current legislature. The proposed reform would introduce three key changes: construction works could only begin after all appeal stages are concluded, fixed and shorter timeframes would be introduced for appeal proceedings, and applicants would be reimbursed if the Planning Authority’s permit is overturned by the tribunal.
On migration, the Prime Minister said the recently introduced Labour Migration Policy is already producing results, noting that Malta recorded its second-lowest net increase in foreign workers since 2017.
Dr Abela also defended the Government’s approach to infrastructure, saying it believes in investing rather than introducing measures that penalise families. He pointed to ongoing road projects, expanded sea transport, public transport electrification and studies on mass transport as part of the Malta in Motion strategy.
The Prime Minister concluded by pledging that the Labour Government will continue implementing all the commitments contained in its “Int Malta” electoral manifesto, including the Super Bonus for workers and funding therapy for children with neurodivergent conditions.
