Psychologist Nicholas Briffa has highlighted what he described as an inspiring display of humility by Norwegian footballer Erling Haaland following Norway’s elimination from the World Cup at the hands of England.
Reflecting on Haaland’s post-match comments, Briffa noted that, despite one of the biggest disappointments of his career, the Manchester City striker did not make excuses or complain about the result. Instead, he praised England midfielder Jude Bellingham, describing him as one of the best players in the world and suggesting that the criticism Bellingham often receives is unfair given the high expectations placed upon him.
Haaland also remarked that both England and Real Madrid are fortunate to have a player of Bellingham’s quality and wished England well for the remainder of the tournament.
For Briffa, these comments reveal the Norwegian striker’s character. “It is easy to praise others when you are winning,” he wrote, adding that true maturity is shown when someone recognises another person’s achievements even when those successes come at their own expense.
He also reflected on Haaland’s words about Norway’s World Cup journey. According to Briffa, the striker said the past six weeks had given him memories for a lifetime and expressed hope that the experience had united the country, adding: “We should be proud.”
Briffa concluded that Haaland’s focus was not on his own goals or personal achievements, but on the unity, supporters and values shown by his national team. He described this as a true example of humility and sportsmanship, saying that a person’s greatness is often seen more clearly in defeat than in victory.
