Speaker of the House of Representatives Carmelo Abela has paid his first official visit to the National Audit Office (NAO) in Floriana, where he was welcomed by Auditor General Charles Deguara. Accompanied by the Clerk to the House, Eleanor Scerri, the Speaker met with the Auditor General and members of the Office’s senior management.
During the visit, the Auditor General presented an overview of the National Audit Office’s work, highlighting its constitutional role in providing assurance to Parliament that public funds are being used appropriately and in accordance with established rules and regulations. He also underlined that the Office’s primary objective is to enhance good governance across the public sector through its audit assignments.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Abela said the visit reflected the importance he places on the National Audit Office’s constitutional role and its close institutional relationship with Parliament. He emphasised that “transparency, accountability and the proper stewardship of public funds are essential foundations of public trust and good governance.” The Speaker also praised the professionalism, independence and commitment shown by the Auditor General and the Office’s staff, noting that the NAO’s work strengthens parliamentary scrutiny and contributes to a more responsible and accountable public administration. He also reminded staff of the importance of carrying out their duties with fairness and responsibility.
During the occasion, Auditor General Charles Deguara formally presented the Speaker with the National Audit Office Annual Report and Financial Statements 2025. The publication provides a comprehensive overview of the Office’s activities, achievements, financial performance, strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts throughout the year. The Auditor General also expressed his appreciation to the Editorial Team for its work on the report.
