Government Approves Legal Protection for White Rocks National Park
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the publication of a Legal Notice that will officially designate White Rocks as a National Park, marking a significant step towards protecting one of Malta’s coastal sites for future generations.

Under the new legal framework, the area will be safeguarded to ensure that public access, recreational use and environmental conservation are given the highest priority. Project Green will be responsible for administering and managing the National Park.

The Government said this measure also fulfils its commitment to provide stronger legal protection for public parks and gardens created in recent years, ensuring they are shielded from any future development.

The announcement forms part of a wider package of reforms that the Government says it has advanced during the first five weeks of parliamentary work in the current legislature. Prime Minister Robert Abela had previously identified these measures as key priorities during his response to the President’s Address at the opening of the 15th Legislature.

Among the reforms already approved or advanced are constitutional amendments recognising disability as a protected characteristic, legislation establishing the National Human Rights and Equality Commission, planning reforms aimed at preventing development while permits remain under appeal, and new legislation to strengthen Malta’s voluntary sector by reducing bureaucracy.

The Government also highlighted the entry into force of the Personal Autonomy Act and the Protection of Adults in Situations of Vulnerability Act, the expansion of the list of genetic conditions eligible for Pre-implantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders (PGT-M) for IVF treatment, and new laws strengthening judicial independence, transparency and scrutiny of decisions by the Attorney General.
