Maria Emma Buhagiar, who recently graduated with a B.A. (Hons) in Theology with Philosophy, explained that her own journey into theology followed an unexpected path.
“From Form Three through my last years of Sixth Form, I studied chemistry, physics and biology. I really loved digging deep and investigating things. Science always pushes you to ask what more is out there.”
That same desire to search for truth eventually led her towards theology and philosophy.
“Theology and philosophy gave me that same connection – the feeling that you can never ask enough questions and there’s always more to discover.”
For Buhagiar, studying theology revealed a new dimension of faith.
“The course showed me another reality of our faith from a more academic perspective. Our faith isn’t simply based on feelings and emotion, but is grounded in knowledge as well.”
She describes the programme as academically rigorous while offering students a broad understanding of the many branches of theology.
“I would rank the course very highly because it is extremely well structured. Theology is divided into many different areas, and the programme gives you a well-rounded understanding of all these realities.”
However, she believes it is the Faculty’s close-knit community that truly sets it apart.
“The lecturers know your face. They know your name. Many of them even know your background. You’re not just another student sitting in a lecture theatre.”
She adds that this creates an environment where students feel genuinely supported.
“You realise that here you are not just a number. You are seen as a whole person, and that creates a very welcoming environment.”

“The first thing is to sit down and see what’s stirring inside you, but also speak to someone. There are various people within the Faculty who can help you understand which course suits you best.”
