The Maltese Bishops have issued a pastoral letter ahead of the 2026 General Election, describing the vote as a “serious responsibility on our shoulders” and urging citizens to make informed and conscientious decisions.
The Maltese bishops said the election is “an event of great importance in the life of Maltese society” as voters will decide “those to whom we entrust the leadership of our country for the years ahead.” The bishops encouraged the public to prepare carefully before casting their vote.
The pastoral letter stressed that voting should be guided by conscience, explaining that this means recognising “what is right and fitting” and choosing what serves “the common good and for a just society.” The bishops also asked citizens to reflect on “what kind of society do we wish to build for all of us and for the generations to come?”
The Maltese bishops further called on voters to support “people of integrity and wisdom” who uphold ethical values, especially “protecting human life at every moment” and respecting the dignity of every person regardless of “race, skin colour, gender or religion.”
The letter concluded with an appeal for respectful dialogue, truth, and prayer during the electoral campaign.
