Prime Minister Robert Abela described the first direct Delta Airlines flight from New York to Malta as a “historic” development and a celebration of Malta’s efforts to strengthen connectivity and broaden national ambition.
Speaking at a press conference marking the arrival of the route, Abela said the connection between the United States and Malta was another sign of confidence in the country. The event was also attended by Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela, Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg, and Delta Airlines representatives.
Flights between New York’s J. F. Kennedy Airport and Malta will operate three times a week. Abela said this would help Malta attract not only quality tourists, but also investors and families visiting the islands, while creating greater opportunities for economic cooperation with the United States.
The Prime Minister also pointed to positive tourism results and ongoing investment at Malta International Airport, noting that, for the first time, one million passengers passed through the airport during spring.
Abela said a government led by him would continue offering stability in energy and supply, allowing aviation operations to continue. He also referred to recent EUROSTAT figures showing Malta’s strong first-quarter economic growth, and S&P Global Ratings confirming a stable rating and outlook.
