Ray Abela has been elected to the House of Representatives following a casual election held to fill the vacancy created after Carmelo Abela resigned his parliamentary seat upon being appointed Speaker of the House.
The casual election was held on the Third Electoral District, where Ray Abela secured the Labour Party seat previously occupied by Carmelo Abela. The vacancy arose after Carmelo Abela was unanimously elected Speaker at the opening of the new legislature and subsequently vacated his parliamentary seat.
Ray Abela returns to Parliament representing the Third Electoral District, restoring the district’s full representation in the House of Representatives.
Reacting to his election, Ray Abela thanked those who supported him throughout the process. In a social media post, he wrote: “Grazzi mhux biżżejjed lilkom kollha tal-fiduċja, lil familja u wisq aktar lil ħbieb u lil helpers kollha. Issa iż-żmien li nkompli bil-ħidma li bdejt biha b’kontinwità minn 4 snin ilu – Magħkom għax tagħkom.” (“Thank you is not enough to express my gratitude to all of you for your trust, to my family, and even more to all my friends and helpers. Now it is time to continue the work I began four years ago—with continuity. With you, because I am yours.”)
Ray Abela’s election marks his return to Parliament, where he will now represent constituents of the Third Electoral District in the current legislature.
