“A strong economy should mean a better life for the people,” said Opposition Leader Alex Borg, in a statement issued shortly before the presentation of Budget 2026. He cautioned that “a strong economy is not just numbers on a piece of paper,” stressing that economic growth should translate into “a quality life for everyone.”
Borg said that despite the government’s slogan for this year’s budget — A strong economy, a future for our children — “many Maltese and Gozitans are not feeling the effects of this so-called strong economy.” He pointed to the rising cost of living, stagnant wages, and the struggles faced by young people “who cannot become homeowners despite working tirelessly, going from one job to another.”
He added that “a significant number of families are living from pay cheque to pay cheque,” and insisted that “if we truly want a future for our children, we must run an economy that works for everyone.” Borg emphasised that the Partit Nazzjonalista envisions “an economy with a heart; an economy that gives dignity, stability, and opportunity to every person and every family.”
