Partit Laburista Leader and Prime Minister Robert Abela announced new family-focused proposals during a political activity in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, including financial support for families with three or more children to purchase larger vehicles.
Addressing a large crowd, Dr Abela said families with bigger households face different financial pressures and should receive additional support. He announced that a future Labour Government would provide a €5,000 grant for families with three or more children to buy a larger vehicle, while those purchasing an electric vehicle would receive €12,000.
“Parents with three children or more face different expenses from other families,” Dr Abela said, adding that “after the 30th of May, a new Labour Government will be behind you with a €5,000 grant to buy a new vehicle and €12,000 if the vehicle is electric.”
The Prime Minister also spoke about the Labour Party’s upcoming electoral manifesto, describing it as the first manifesto in Malta’s history to include 25 specific economic, social, environmental, and cultural targets. He said the success of the programme would be measured by how much it improves the wellbeing of Maltese and Gozitan citizens.
Dr Abela further announced additional support for people who continue working after the age of 61 instead of retiring. Alongside the existing €1,000 “super bonus” and the ability to transfer extra national insurance contributions to their spouse, the government would introduce an extra €500 annual benefit for four years, amounting to €2,000 until retirement at age 65.
He also pledged refunds on planning fees for people investing in sustainable buildings designed to consume less energy. The Prime Minister said Malta’s strong economy allows the Labour Party to present an ambitious programme aimed at supporting citizens “at every stage of life.”
