The Labour Party has accused the Nationalist Party (PN) of attempting to exploit recent localised power outages for political gain, insisting that Malta’s electricity system remains capable of meeting demand despite the extreme weather conditions affecting much of Europe.
In a statement, the Labour Party said the Opposition was creating a false sense of urgency by describing localised faults as evidence of a wider collapse of the country’s energy network. According to the party, the recent outages affecting parts of Birkirkara, Balzan and Iklin were caused by four separate and localised cable faults, rather than a lack of electricity generation capacity.
The party argued that the country has sufficient energy generation to meet record demand created by the ongoing heatwave. It added that the Government’s immediate priority is to restore electricity supplies to affected families and businesses as quickly as possible while continuing investment to strengthen and modernise the national electricity network.
The Labour Party also expressed support for Enemalta employees working in high temperatures to repair damaged infrastructure, saying criticism of the current situation shows a lack of respect towards workers carrying out emergency repairs under challenging conditions.
The statement also pointed to recent disruptions across Europe, noting that countries including France, Italy and Germany have experienced electricity outages and interruptions to transport, hospitals, schools and other public services due to extreme weather.
The Labour Party said the Government has been implementing an extensive programme to strengthen the electricity network since the summer of 2023, adding that work to improve its resilience will continue.
