The United Nations Security Council heard renewed calls on Tuesday for stronger international support for Syria’s political transition, economic recovery and reconstruction, as Member States highlighted both the progress made since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad Government and the significant challenges that remain.
Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group, Palestine’s representative Sahar Abu Shawish urged the international community to accompany Syria throughout its transition by increasing investment and helping build a “prosperous and safe country.” She also called for the United Nations to play a greater role in supporting Syria’s national priorities, including economic recovery, reconstruction and the voluntary, safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees.
According to the UN, more than one million Syrian refugees have returned home since the former Government fell on 8 December 2024, while a further 1.8 million internally displaced people have returned to their areas of origin.
Addressing the Council, Syria’s representative Ibrahim Olabi said the country’s key transitional institutions are now in place, including the People’s Assembly and the Supreme Constitutional Court. He added that accountability proceedings have begun following the recent violence in Sweida and pledged support for displaced communities.
Several countries also called for continued humanitarian assistance and investment in Syria’s recovery. Türkiye stressed the importance of reconstruction and development, while Denmark warned that 90% of Syria’s population still lives below the poverty line. The United States announced that lifting restrictions on Syria would help unlock new trade and investment opportunities while continuing efforts to combat ISIS.
