The Labour Party has accused the Nationalist Party (PN) of spreading misinformation regarding recent reforms on the protection of agricultural land. In a statement, the PL said that the PN “continues to spread fake news even on what is clearly written black on white crystallised in law.”
According to the statement, the Opposition is “intentionally alarming the people” by suggesting that the reform could affect hobbies carried out on agricultural land. The Labour Party insisted that the legal amendments “have no impact on any practice or hobby that takes place in our fields,” noting that the Legal Notice has been in force for months “and no activity or hobby has been prohibited.”
The statement argued that the PN’s claims ignore the reality that “80% of agricultural land in Malta is already registered,” with many land users benefiting from government schemes. The reforms, the Labour Party said, aim to strengthen national food security.
It added that the legislation followed a “serious and transparent process,” beginning with a 2022 White Paper and public consultation. The Labour Party accused the PN of previously proposing amendments that NGOs had warned could “endanger their hobby.”
