Momentum has welcomed the Government’s decision to return Manoel Island to public ownership, describing it as the result of “sustained and justified public pressure.” The organisation stated that this outcome shows how collective action can lead to meaningful change.
According to Momentum, Manoel Island has long represented “the wider failure of successive administrations to prioritise the common good over intensive private development.” Its return to the public domain is being seen as an important step towards restoring public trust and rebalancing national priorities.
The group is now calling for a clear and binding commitment that Manoel Island should be transformed into a car-free national park and heritage space, fully accessible to the Maltese public. It described this as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to create a green and cultural landmark for future generations.
At the same time, Momentum raised concerns about ongoing issues in Mellieħa, particularly in the Ta’ Żnuber area. The organisation warned that these cases reflect similar challenges, including lack of transparency and pressure on environmentally sensitive land.
Momentum member Carrmel Asciak stated that while the decision on Manoel Island is positive, “it should not have taken such sustained public pressure.” He stressed the need for stronger institutions that act proactively in the public interest.
