Two Maltese representatives will take part in an international conference dedicated to intangible cultural heritage, which will be held in Andrano, Italy. The event, the 11th Edition of the Scuola di Storia delle Tradizioni Popolari, will bring together academics, researchers and professionals from different countries to discuss the importance of traditions, gastronomy and culture in shaping community identity.

Malta will be represented by Clifford Galea, Malta’s Ambassador to Namibia, President of the Northern Region and Assistant Director within the Directorate for Culture, together with Melanie Ciantar Harrington from the Directorate’s Office for Intangible Cultural Heritage. During the conference, Galea will lead a workshop entitled “Il cibo maltese come patrimonio culturale immateriale – Il caso dei pastizzi e altro ancora”. His presentation will focus on his research into Maltese pastizzi as an important element of the country’s intangible cultural heritage and their role in promoting both national identity and cultural tourism.

Meanwhile, Melanie Ciantar Harrington will present Malta’s experience and ongoing work in safeguarding and promoting intangible cultural heritage through the Directorate for Culture’s dedicated office. Organisers explained that the conference aims to explore the role of popular traditions, gastronomy and culture as “fundamental elements of the identity of communities.” Malta’s participation further strengthens its international presence in the field while highlighting the country’s continued commitment to protecting and promoting its rich cultural traditions.
