Archbishop Charles Scicluna has expressed strong concern following what was described as an “unjustified attack” on Pope Leo XIV by the President of the United States. Speaking on behalf of the Church in Malta, he reiterated solidarity with the Pope, reflecting sentiments shared by many Catholics worldwide.
The Pope recently reaffirmed the Church’s long-standing message, stating: “War divides; hope unites. Arrogance crushes others; love lifts up. Idolatry blinds; the living God enlightens us.” His words were presented as a continuation of the Church’s consistent teaching throughout history, centred on peace and human dignity.
He further emphasised that the Church will always promote peace, “even when rejecting the logic of war may lead to misunderstanding and contempt.” The Pope also made a humanitarian appeal to world leaders to “listen to the voices of children,” whose lives have been deeply affected by conflict and actions “that some adults have proudly boasted about.”
In light of these developments, Archbishop Scicluna communicated his concerns to the United States Ambassador to Malta, assuring continued “love, loyalty and support” from the Church in Malta towards the Pope.
