A new fleet for the Malta Police Force was inaugurated this morning in Kalkara, as part of efforts aimed at “strengthening operational capability.” The launch was attended by Ministers Byron Camilleri, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà.
The investment includes 30 Alfa Stelvio Sprint vehicles assigned to the Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU), intended to enhance “mobility, surveillance and operational response in public spaces.” Authorities explained that these vehicles are equipped with advanced technology and are designed to strengthen the force’s ability to address serious criminal threats.
This initiative forms part of the project “Enhancing the protection of public spaces through the procurement of specialised vehicles,” with a total investment of €1,824,000. Of these, 16 vehicles are co-funded by the European Union under the Internal Security Fund Programme 2021–2027.
Additional resources were also allocated to the Roads Policing Unit, including two Skoda Octavia and four Ford Custom vehicles, with an investment exceeding €300,000. Commissioner Gafà noted that such investments are already showing results, highlighting over 612,000 km of patrols and more than 3,400 road checks carried out last year.
