The Malta Police Force joined the people of Ħaż-Żabbar in a solemn act of remembrance marking the 50th anniversary of the Vulcan XM645 air crash, one of the most tragic events in Malta’s post-war history.

The commemorative event, organised by the Kunsill Lokali Ħaż-Żabbar, featured a moving performance by the Malta Police Band, whose music paid tribute to the victims of the 1975 disaster that claimed several lives and left a lasting impact on the local community.

As part of the ceremony, Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà laid a wreath at a newly inaugurated memorial dedicated to those who perished in the crash. The gesture symbolised the continued respect and remembrance that the nation holds for the victims and their families.
The Vulcan XM645, a Royal Air Force bomber, crashed over Żabbar on 14 October 1975, after suffering serious damage during a failed landing attempt at Luqa Airport. While two crew members managed to eject safely, five others — along with a local resident — lost their lives, and many homes were destroyed in the tragedy.

Half a century later, the Żabbar community continues to honour their memory — a reflection of resilience, solidarity, and the enduring spirit of remembrance that unites the Maltese people.
