Malta has Highest Employment Rate in the EU

Malta has recorded the highest employment rate among all 27 European Union member states for the first time, according to Eurostat statistics. The figures show that Malta reached an employment rate of 83.6%, placing it in first position, with a rate that is 7% higher than the EU average.

Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri stated that this milestone reflects the country’s progress over recent years. He explained that in 2012 Malta’s employment rate was around 3% below the EU average and among the lowest in the Union. “Work gives dignity and the Government’s policy operated on two fronts,” he said, referring to economic growth and socially driven measures such as tapering of benefits and in-work benefits which encouraged more people to enter employment.

The Minister added that this strong performance allows the Government to focus on quality, skills, and better work-life balance as part of Malta Vision 2050.
