The Labour Party has expressed “great seriousness” over what it describes as the Nationalist Party’s failure to uphold its own internal rules. In a statement, it said the PN is “discarding and acting in breach of its own statute”, raising concerns about the party’s governance and accountability.
According to the Labour Party, this issue emerged after media questions revealed that Graham Bencini, President of the PN Administrative Council, “does not know who the auditor responsible for auditing the PN’s financial accounts is”, despite being the official assigned to appoint the auditor under the party’s rules.
The Labour Party highlighted paragraph 71(g) of the Nationalist Party statute, which states that “the Administrative Council shall also appoint an External Auditor holding a warrant issued under the Accountancy Profession Act to verify the party’s accounts.” It argued this raises further doubts about internal compliance and oversight within the PN.
The statement added that the PN’s financial circumstances “continue to expose the true colours of the PN leadership,” questioning how the public could trust a future PN government “when it cannot even respect its own councillors… and abide by its own statute and internal structures.”
