A public call for the regeneration of Baħrija Square will be issued in the coming weeks, as part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to beautify town centres and public spaces across Malta. The announcement was made by Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia during a visit to ongoing works around the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Ta’ Casha) in Rabat.

Farrugia emphasised that improving pedestrian zones and enhancing architectural heritage sites is essential to building “cleaner, more liveable and culturally vibrant communities.” He explained that the Public Works Department has worked on six pedestrian projects in recent months, including in Mosta, Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Ħal Kirkop, and Rabat, and that more are planned for the year ahead “to create more projects for the enjoyment of the community.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Cleanliness Glenn Bedingfield noted that this year’s Budget strengthens investment in community cleanliness. “Public cleanliness means a more beautiful and better environment for Maltese communities,” he said, adding that 14 workers are now deployed regularly in Rabat to maintain the area.

Rabat Mayor Sandro Craus welcomed the project announcement, praising the collaboration between the Public Works Department, the Cleansing and Maintenance Division, and the Rabat Local Council.
