Trappist monk and Norwegian Bishop Erik Varden is currently in Malta, where he will be delivering a public lecture titled “Living with Hope in a Time of Crisis” at the Museum Society Auditorium, Blata l-Bajda, on Wednesday, 29 October at 7:00pm. The talk will be held in English and is open to all.
Bishop Varden is widely known for his spiritual depth and his thought-provoking reflections on how to live the Catholic faith authentically in the modern world. Raised in a secular environment, he began seeking the meaning of life and God’s presence at a young age. After studying music and literature at Cambridge, he felt called to monastic life and joined the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance (Trappists) at Mount Saint Bernard Abbey in England, where he became abbot in 2015.

In 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Trondheim, one of Norway’s few Catholic dioceses. Despite the country’s small Catholic community, Varden has become an influential figure across faith boundaries. His writings stand out for their poetic language and spiritual insight, encouraging Christians to live their faith with authenticity, joy, and hope amid secular realities.
