The Labour Party has paid tribute to former Birkirkara Mayor Joanne Debono Grech, honouring her long public service and deep commitment to the locality. In its message, the party described her as “a great woman who loved the people and fought her illness till the end,” adding that “Birkirkara was everything for her.” She served as Mayor for 11 years and spent another 13 years as Councillor and Minority Leader, while also being “an important voice in activism and internal structures within the Labour Party.”
The Labour Party extended “its sincere condolences to her relatives, in particular to her father, former Labour Minister and former PL Deputy Leader Joe Debono Grech and her daughter, Councillor Yana Borg Debono Grech.”
In a separate notice, the Birkirkara Local Council expressed “its deep sorrow at the loss of former Mayor Joanne Debono Grech, who served in this role from 2013 to 2024.” The Council described her as “a person of integrity, dedication, and genuine service,” noting her strong leadership and respect toward those who worked with her. The funeral will take place on Saturday, 15 November 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at the Basilica of St Helen, and the Council’s administrative office will be closed for the day.
