The Franciscan community of Ta’ Gieżu in Valletta has shared the heartbreaking news of the passing of Nadab John, a 15-year-old Pakistani altar server, just six weeks after he took part in his investiture as an altar server.

The 15-year-old boy from Pakistan, tragically died after getting into difficulty while swimming in Xgħajra on Saturday afternoon.

The teenager, was descibed by the Friars as the eldest of the group of altar servers, who, together with his siblings, wished to serve at the altar.

The Franciscans recalled that, on the day of his investiture, he “promised to remain close to Jesus through his service at the altar.” His parents dressed him in the white robe of an altar server, while the Franciscan Provincial invested him with the Tau Cross of St. Francis bearing the image of the Crucified Christ.

Writing on the unexpected loss, the Friars wrote: “Who could ever have imagined that just six weeks later he would leave us and go to be with the Lord whom he loved?” They added that they are certain he is now praying for everyone.

The Franciscans asked the faithful to pray for the boy’s parents, siblings, relatives and the Pakistani Catholic community that gathers at the church during this difficult time.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.
