During the feast Mass of Saint Publius, Archbishop Charles Scicluna reflected on the saint’s cloak as a powerful symbol of protection and service. He explained that the cloak represents a call to authority rooted in responsibility, not decoration, stating that it should be used “not to break and destroy, threaten or insult; but as a service to help, heal, build and bear fruit.”

The Archbishop described the cloak as a reminder of how Saint Publius welcomed and cared for others, particularly during the shipwreck of Saint Paul, when he offered shelter to 276 people. He emphasised that the saint “saw in them human beings” and responded with compassion, offering both physical and spiritual support.

He added that the cloak is also a sign of God’s protection, highlighting that true strength lies in “a heart that welcomes and serves.” Addressing national leaders present, he called on those in authority to embody these values, using their power to protect and serve society with dignity and respect.

At the end of the Mass, Archbishop Scicluna prayed for the country to always be granted strength and guidance, while urging the faithful to look to Saint Publius as an example of service and unity.
