Police have revealed further details about the shooting incident in Ta’ Ġiorni, explaining that the case initially began as an investigation into a suspected arson report before escalating into a serious armed confrontation.
Speaking before the aggressor was arrested, a police spokesperson said officers were informed at around 10:30am of “a case of fire, most likely arson.” District Police officers and members of the Rapid Intervention Unit responded immediately to the scene.
According to the spokesperson, officers identified one person inside the building, while another individual who had allegedly been with him had just left the area and was “immediately arrested.” He said that, as police entered the building to investigate the suspected arson, the individual inside allegedly opened fire on the officers, slightly injuring one police officer. Additional police units were immediately called after several shots were fired from inside the building towards officers.
The spokesperson explained that when the Special Intervention Unit arrived to assist, the suspect “continued to open fire, multiple shots” at officers. During the exchange, one police officer suffered serious injuries to the face and neck and was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was reported to be in a very serious condition.
Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that the situation had been brought under control. He stated that the two alleged aggressors involved in the incident were now in Police custody and that all Police officers had safely exited the scene.
Abela also expressed his thoughts to the two injured police officers and their families, saying they were in his prayers during this difficult time. Concluding his statement, he stressed that “now, justice must be done.”
The incident remains under Police investigation.
