The Franciscan community at Ta’ Ġieżu Church in Valletta has raised serious concerns over a new planning application which it says could threaten the future of one of Malta’s most historic churches. In a public statement, the community warned that the proposed development could have a lasting impact on the church’s mission, accessibility and atmosphere of prayer.
The Franciscans explained that they have spent years asking the Police to intervene over excessive noise caused by nearby entertainment establishments. According to the statement, the situation has often made it difficult to celebrate Mass with the dignity it deserves. They now warn that a new permit application for another establishment close to the church could further worsen the situation.
The community said the proposed development would make use of the public staircase leading to the church, potentially increasing noise levels and reducing accessibility for elderly, sick and vulnerable people who visit the church seeking “serenity, peace and shelter” during times of illness and hardship. While stressing that they are “not against a lively Valletta,” the Franciscans said people also have the right to practise their faith without disruption.
Ta’ Ġieżu serves four communities—Maltese, Indian, Pakistani and Filipino—with hundreds of people attending every week and is also the home of the devout Miraculous Crucifix. The Franciscans warned that remaining silent could mean losing “all that our forefathers built over the last 450 years,” describing the issue as one concerning Malta’s heritage, faith and identity rather than partisan politics.
The concerns relate to Planning Authority application PA/05005/26, which proposes changes to a pre-1968 building at 8, Triq San Ġwann, Valletta. According to the public notice, the application includes a change of use to a Class 4D establishment and seeks permission to create an outdoor catering area with tables and chairs located within public open space. The Planning Authority is accepting public representations on the application until 7 September 2026.
Those wishing to object to the application can send an email to [email protected] with the subject line: “Objection to Application PA/05005/26 – 8 Triq San Ġwann, Valletta.” Interested parties should clearly state the application number and the reasons for their objection. According to the Planning Authority notice, representations will be accepted until 7 September 2026.
