The Environmental Health Directorate has advised the public that bathing is not recommended at a site in Birżebbuġa as a precautionary measure.
According to the notice, the warning was issued under the Bathing Water Directive after a “percolation of sewage into the sea” was reported. The Directorate said this may affect bathing water quality and could pose a risk to bathers’ health.
Environmental Health Officers identified the source of contamination as coming from private residences in Triq it-Tankijiet, Birżebbuġa. An abatement notice has been issued, while legal action has also been initiated against the owner concerned.
The affected area is listed as Site Code Between A13-A14, located at Dawret il-Qalb Imqaddsa, Birżebbuġa. Signs have been placed in the area to inform the public.
Authorities said that, at this stage, the duration of the contamination cannot be predicted. Once the water quality is restored, the signs will be removed and another press release will be issued confirming that the site is again fit for bathing.
