The first dialysis service within the San Vinċenz de Paul complex is expected to start operating in the coming weeks, providing essential care for kidney patients aged over 60, both residents and members of the wider community. The new service will offer treatment in a more accessible environment fully adapted to their needs, forming part of a broader investment currently underway in the Day Clinic.

During a visit to the complex, Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea announced that the clinic will house six dialysis machines, including one kept as a backup for emergencies. Work is also nearing completion on an advanced reverse osmosis system, as well as ventilation systems and dedicated piping designed to maintain the highest safety and sterilisation standards.

The machines are expected to arrive in the coming days, allowing the Unit to begin offering up to 70 dialysis sessions per week. This development will ease pressure on Mater Dei Hospital while increasing access to treatment at community level.

“This first Renal Unit at San Vinċenz is another step towards care that is closer to the patient and that gives greater dignity to our elderly,” Agius Galea said, adding that the pilot project will pave the way for expanding the service to a total of 18 machines in the months ahead.
