Protesters Rally to Protect Żabbar’s Historic Square

A significant crowd gathered in Misraħ Madonna Medjatriċi on the public holiday as Żabbar residents and the Local Council protested against the approved permit PA/01617/24 for a five-storey development beside the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces. The strong attendance reflected the depth of public concern over the future of the town’s historic core.

Organisers described the demonstration as an act of unity that rose “beyond colours and differing opinions.” Residents argued that the scale of the proposed building would permanently alter the character of the square, overshadow the sanctuary, and disrupt the visual balance of one of Żabbar’s most recognised heritage zones.

The Local Council stressed that it is not opposed to a home for the elderly but insisted that the height should be limited to 3+1, in line with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage. It warned that allowing a structure almost reaching the sanctuary’s roofline amounts to the destruction—not development—of the square’s identity.

Public figures also echoed concerns, urging protection of collective memory and patrimony for future generations. The sentiment across the crowd was clear: Żabbar’s heritage must remain whole, respected, and visible.
