The proposed development in Misraħ il-Medjatrici in Ħaż-Żabbar — a site described as a historic and authentic area — is facing strong objections from the Ħaż-Żabbar Local Council, several members of Government, Parliament, and political entities, together with the wider Żabbar community.
President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca reflected on the issue, noting that it “reminds me of what children often tell me.” She explained that children “long for and want the protection of our identity,” stressing the importance of safeguarding what makes the Maltese people genuinely Maltese and Mediterranean.
Coleiro Preca said that children clearly express that they want the heart of towns and villages preserved, because these spaces create an environment that gives them “a sense of connection with the community.” She added that children wish to see what they consider part of their home environment “kept and protected.”
She expressed hope that “common sense will prevail in this matter,” and that reason and the will of the people will ultimately triumph.
