Pope Leo XIV called on the faithful to rediscover the importance of Sunday Mass and the Eucharist during the Regina Coeli on the feast of Divine Mercy Sunday in St Peter’s Square.

Addressing thousands of pilgrims, the Pope said that faith is born from a personal encounter with the Risen Christ, particularly within the community. Reflecting on the Gospel of St Thomas, he explained how the apostle meets Jesus “eight days later” among the gathered disciples, highlighting that it is within the Church and shared faith that believers can recognise Christ today.

He acknowledged that believing is not always easy, noting that faith must be “nourished and sustained” over time. For this reason, he stressed the central role of Sunday, describing the Eucharist as essential for Christian life. Through the Mass, he said, believers listen to the Word, profess their faith, and are sent out on a mission to live it.

The Pope also recalled the witness of the Martyrs of Abitene, who chose death rather than give up celebrating the Eucharist, underlining its importance as a source of spiritual strength.

He concluded by urging Christians to remain faithful to the Eucharistic encounter, becoming “witnesses of charity and bearers of peace” in a world in need of reconciliation.
