The Nationalist Opposition has tabled a motion of censure and no confidence in Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, citing the recent nationwide power cut crisis and calling on Prime Minister Robert Abela to request her resignation or remove her from office.
The motion was presented in Parliament by Opposition Leader Alex Borg together with Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut. According to the Partit Nazzjonalista, the motion follows what it describes as the Government’s failure to provide a reliable essential service after weeks of repeated power cuts left thousands of families and businesses without electricity during the height of summer.
In its statement, the PN argued that this is not an isolated incident, noting that a similar crisis occurred in the summer of 2023, when another motion was presented. The party said that despite Government promises and announcements of major investment in the electricity distribution network, the problem has persisted.
The Opposition also referred to the findings of the National Audit Office (NAO), which concluded that shortcomings in Enemalta’s planning and insufficient investment in the electricity distribution network were the main causes of the crisis.
According to the PN, the Government failed to plan for increasing electricity demand resulting from population growth, leaving the country’s infrastructure unable to cope. The party also criticised Minister Dalli for refusing to accept political responsibility for the situation.
The PN stated that ministers should accept political responsibility when failures within their portfolio lead to a national crisis affecting people’s daily lives and health, adding that the Maltese and Gozitan people deserve reliable infrastructure, dependable services and accountable leadership.
