PN Leader Alex Borg announced a new economic proposal centred on the creation of a Mediterranean Maritime Fuel Hub (MMFH), stating that “a new Nationalist Government will continue to attract new economic niches.” The announcement was made during a press conference at the PN headquarters, where further proposals aimed at benefiting the Maltese and Gozitan population were presented.
Dr Borg explained that the project will be developed offshore at Hurd’s Bank, allowing vessels to receive services without entering Malta’s ports or bays. He said this would reduce congestion while helping ships save time. The proposal includes the creation of an LNG terminal offshore, with the potential to expand into alternative fuels in the future. According to the PN leader, the initiative is expected to generate around €450 million within its first three years.
The proposal also includes relocating the gas tanker currently situated in Marsaxlokk bay. Dr Borg said this would remove risks to nearby residents and improve supply security, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
PN spokesperson Ivan Castillo added that Malta currently lacks infrastructure for alternative fuel bunkering, while candidate Oliver Cini noted the project is built on three main pillars and aims to create around 150 new jobs.
