PN: “Fight Abuse, Not Business”

The Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) has criticised Finance Minister Clyde Caruana for remarks which, it said, implied that a large number of Maltese businesses are evading tax. The PN described the remarks as “irresponsible and unserious,” stating that they unfairly tarnish the reputation of “hundreds of honest entrepreneurs and companies who work diligently and pay all dues according to the law.”

The Opposition emphasised that such statements risk harming Malta’s business climate and undermining the credibility of “professionals, including accountants, auditors and tax advisors.” It noted that the Malta Chamber had already warned that generalised accusations could damage firms operating transparently but facing temporary financial challenges.

The PN recalled that Minister Caruana had made similar remarks in the past against restaurant owners, which had “provoked a strong backlash from those who operate transparently and correctly.” The party stressed that ministers should “lead by example, showing seriousness, transparency and respect” rather than spreading suspicion.

“The PN is against abuse, but in favour of business,” the statement concluded, adding that enforcement should target actual wrongdoing without vilifying the wider business community.
