The Partit Nazzjonalista has called for stronger inclusion and a greater sense of belonging for persons with Down Syndrome, stressing that no individual should feel isolated within society. In a statement marking World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March, the party highlighted research showing that 39% of persons with an intellectual disability often experience loneliness, compared to 14% among those without a disability. Another study indicates they are seven times more likely to feel lonely than the general population.
The theme for this year, “Together Against Loneliness”, focuses on addressing isolation and promoting inclusive communities. The PN emphasised that individuals with Down Syndrome must be supported to live fulfilling lives, with equal opportunities and full participation in society. It also stressed that they have the right to dignity and a quality of life equal to any other person.
The party called for increased awareness to eliminate stigma and stereotypes, noting that a fair society is measured by how it supports those most in need. It thanked organisations such as the Malta Down Syndrome Association and professionals working in the field for their continued efforts in promoting rights and inclusion, while urging continued progress to improve quality of life.
