New Family Park to Replace Sant’Antnin Waste Facility in Marsaskala

The Labour Party has announced that Budget 2026 will continue to allocate significant funds for large-scale waste management projects aimed at turning waste into a national resource. A delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Labour Leader Ian Borg visited the ECOHIVE Complex, the country’s largest-ever investment in the waste treatment sector under WasteServ’s responsibility.

Spanning 700,000m², the Ecohive complex includes two plants — one for processing organic waste into energy. WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca explained that the facility is generating record energy levels, enough to power around 1,200 households annually. He noted that while 95% of waste went to landfills before 2013, the target for 2035 is to reduce this to 10%.

Bilocca outlined new projects announced in Budget 2026, including an €85 million organic waste processing plant producing biogas and compost, and a €17 million skip management plant to recover more recyclable material. The Sant’Antnin site is being transformed into a 24,000m² family park, while a new automated glass plant in Marsaskala processes up to 52,000 bottles per hour for export.

Ian Borg praised the “turning of challenges into opportunities,” highlighting how waste is now “being sorted, sold, and used as an energy resource.” He thanked WasteServ employees and the public for supporting Malta’s circular economy goals.
