Four cooperation agreements between Malta and Turkey were signed during a three-day official visit to Ankara by Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima. The visit, accompanied by Malta’s Ambassador to Turkey Dr Marisa Farrugia and First Secretary Charles Calleja, marked a significant strengthening of bilateral collaboration across education, sport, and youth sectors.

A key agreement was signed with Turkey’s Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, opening doors to collaboration in student and academic exchanges, joint research, digital education, and the promotion of both countries’ languages and cultures. During their meeting, both ministers emphasised “the vital role of education in building peace, promoting human rights, and strengthening justice in modern societies.” Minister Grima described the accord as a first concrete step toward deeper knowledge exchange and new opportunities for students and academics.

Two more agreements were signed with Turkey’s Minister for Youth and Sport Dr Osman Aşkın Bak, further enhancing cooperation in youth development and sports infrastructure. These agreements provide for youth exchanges, expertise sharing, joint participation in international events, and collaboration in areas such as training and bridging the digital divide.

A fourth historic agreement was signed with Prof Dr Erol Özvar, President of Turkey’s Council of Higher Education, establishing a framework for academic mobility, joint degree programmes, and cooperation in areas including maritime studies, tourism, archaeology, historical archives, water desalination, and blockchain technologies.
