Pope Leo XIV has continued his strong appeal for peace, linking the suffering caused by global conflicts to the experience of children, whose “lost eyes” in the face of war should lead humanity towards conversion.
Following his recent Angelus message, where he described war as “a scandal for the whole human family,” the Pope expanded on this reflection in a letter marking the 30th anniversary of the children’s publication Popotus. He wrote that “in these days of great concern about wars,” people must look to children to rediscover a more humane perspective and “remain human.”

The Pontiff warned that the suffering of the youngest victims of conflict should not be ignored, stressing that “only by looking into the lost eyes of children… can we convert.” He urged society to rediscover compassion and responsibility in the face of violence.
Pope Leo XIV also raised concerns about the digital age, cautioning against allowing children to see artificial intelligence as “their best friends” or “the oracle of all knowledge,” which could weaken their intellectual and relational development.

He concluded by encouraging parents and educators to guide children with care, preserving “a childlike outlook on reality” as a path towards rebuilding a more peaceful and compassionate world.
