The Labour Party on Monday issued a statement accusing the Nationalist Party (PN) of showing “arrogance” and disregarding parliamentary institutions. The press release said the PN “had every right, every chance and every opportunity to contest the Speaker’s ruling about the lie that the PN and its spokespersons, Darren Carabott and Joe Giglio, made on Minister Byron Camilleri last week,” but chose not to do so.
According to the Labour Party, the PN failed to challenge the ruling because “they know that they did not have support and because they know that they lied.” The statement added that the party also “chose not to comply with the ruling given by the Speaker of the House,” prompting a second ruling on Monday morning that “found the Nationalist Party guilty of breach of privilege.”
The press release argued that ignoring the Speaker’s directions amounts to a “clear sign of arrogance,” noting that parliamentary rules “had to be respected as it was respected at other occasions, including at the request of Nationalist MPs.”
It further criticised what it described as repeated PN behaviour inside Parliament, stating that the party “does not respect the Parliament… sometimes by quitting the Chamber, others by blocking important broadcasts, others by throwing things, other times attacking directly the Speaker.”
The Labour Party concluded that the PN “is dangerous to democracy if it is entrusted with power.”
