Hard work pays off? – Over 280,000 Workers to Receive “Government Bonus”

More than 280,000 workers in Malta have begun receiving another government bonus “to reward hard work,” marking the eighth consecutive year of this initiative. The one-time payment, ranging between €60 and €140, applies to all those employed during 2023. Over the eight-year span, the government will have invested more than €158 million in this measure.

This bonus comes in addition to major tax cuts introduced for all workers. Under the new system, “no worker will pay tax on the first €1,000 per month they earn.” The upcoming 2026 Budget further reduces taxes for working parents. From 2028, a family with two working parents each earning up to €30,000 a year “will not pay a cent in tax for 25 years.” Parents with one child will also benefit — paying no tax on the first €1,500 per month, while those with two children will be exempt on the first €2,500 per month.

The government said it remains committed to protecting workers and families “at a time when other European countries are imposing austerity.” It added that Budget 2026 will support employers through schemes subsidising up to 80% of wage increases in Gozo and 60% in Malta.
