St John Ambulance and Rescue (SJAR) has launched a new water safety and rescue project aimed at strengthening the skills of 140 volunteers and educating more than 400 students.
The project was made possible through a €20,000 VOPS grant managed by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector within the Ministry for Inclusion and Voluntary Work. It includes a new specialised Rapid Rescue Vehicle, volunteer training and educational material.
Minister Julia Farrugia launched the initiative during an SJAR event featuring a swimming pool rescue demonstration. SJAR volunteers regularly undergo water training to maintain skills required for lifeguarding and emergency services on land and at sea.
Between this month and September, the “Young Lives Safe Shores” campaign will deliver interactive sessions in schools, summer schools and youth centres, reaching more than 400 students. Children will learn how to react safely near water and respond during emergencies.
The new rescue vehicle will carry essential medical and lifesaving equipment, supporting SJAR’s assistance to Civil Protection and health authorities.
Farrugia said “knowledge and skills acquired from an early age can save lives”.
