A Mosta councillor has raised concerns about emergency access in the locality after a residence caught fire on Saturday evening in Triq il-Bażilika. According to PN Mosta councillor Thomas De Martino, ambulances, fire engines and police officers found the square closed off when heading to the scene “because Transport Malta is still insisting on closing the square for no reason, against the wishes of Mosta residents.”
De Martino said the emergency teams “lost precious time struggling with the barricades” while trying to reach the burning residence, stressing that during a fire “every second counts to save lives.”
He argued that the ongoing closure of the square is unnecessary when no public activities are taking place. “The square is uselessly closed when there is no activity,” he noted, adding that although the council frequently organises events, “there is no need for Transport Malta to keep it closed when no one is there.”
The councillor suggested that the square should only be closed during actual events, asking: “Why don’t we close it only when there is an activity, and Transport Malta helps us organise more events?” He concluded by questioning the authorities’ approach: “What are we waiting for until common sense prevails?”
