Archbishop Charles Scicluna Reflects on the Identity of Jesus in Today’s Gospel

In his homily delivered this morning at the Chapel of the President’s Palace in Ħ’Attard, Archbishop Charles Jude Scicluna reflected on the fundamental question posed by the Gospel: “Who is Jesus?” He explained that Saint John introduces Jesus not by his earthly background, but by proclaiming, “Behold the Lamb of God” (John 1:29).

The Archbishop noted that in Aramaic, the word “lamb” can also mean child, son, or servant. This, he said, presents Jesus as a gentle and humble figure, echoing Christ’s own words: “Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:28). He also referred to the prophecy of Isaiah, “Like a lamb led to the slaughter… he did not open his mouth” (Isaiah 53:7).

Archbishop Scicluna stressed that Jesus is revealed as the Lamb of God, the Servant of God, and the Son of God. He explained that the fundamental sin of the world is pride, and that Jesus came to destroy its power through humility.

Concluding his reflection, the Archbishop invited the faithful to welcome Jesus with humility and to pray: “Purify us from pride and from our sin.”
