The Labour Party’s Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba said that “only socialists can offer solutions” to the global challenges being faced today, as he closed the Socialist International Council meeting held for the first time in Malta.
He outlined three ways socialist parties can continue attracting voters: taking “necessary decisions for the people,” exposing “the lies of populists,” and focusing on what impacts citizens most. He added that socialists have already shown what change they can deliver and “how relevant they remain for the future.”
Agius Saliba warned that democracy is being threatened by the rise of populism and the extreme right, while conflicts such as those in the Middle East continue to escalate, stating that “no one is managing to stop Israel from creating suffering” in Gaza. He stressed the need for urgent solutions that restore peace, rule of law and address inflation, inequality and labour disparities.
He said Malta’s situation differs from other countries, arguing that a Labour government “keeps people at the centre of decisions,” improving quality of life through timely decisions and a strong economic model.
Labour officials Alex Sciberras and John Grech also addressed the Council, emphasising socialist values, social justice, peace-driven economies and ongoing engagement with families and youth.
