A new monument honouring former Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici has been inaugurated in Castille Square. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Robert Abela reflected on the former leader’s legacy, describing him as a lawyer and politician who “embraced the values of social justice, integrity and humility.” He noted that Mifsud Bonnici “gave us the greatest gift — his time,” recalling his constant availability to the public and his strong advocacy for workers.
The monument, produced in Italy through a collaboration between Heritage Malta and the Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government, features a Maltese hard-stone pedestal and a bronze statue designed by Maltese artist Manuel Farrugia. It portrays Mifsud Bonnici as a dedicated public servant, “close to the people and always ready to listen.”
Prime Minister Abela said the legacy of Mifsud Bonnici “is still lived and enjoyed to this very day,” highlighting his introduction of the principle of neutrality and his efforts to entrench the supremacy of the people’s will — reforms that strengthened democracy and stability. Minister Owen Bonnici described him as an authentic gentleman of principle, while Heritage Malta Chairman Mario Cutajar emphasised his enduring political, legal and intellectual contribution to Malta.
