A newly published second edition of A Politics of Peace: The Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs during the Pontificate of Benedict XV (1914–1922) has been released by Edizioni Studium – Pontificia. The book is the result of years of research by Church historian Rev. Dr Nicholas Joseph Doublet, Senior Lecturer in Church History, Patrology and Palaeochristian Archaeology at the University of Malta.
The volume, which originated as Dr Doublet’s doctoral dissertation defended at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana in 2016, examines the work of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs during a critical moment in world history. This body of the Roman Curia oversaw the Vatican’s bilateral relations with other states and managed sensitive ecclesiastical matters in local churches.
Through extensive archival research, Dr Doublet’s study presents the cardinal members of this Congregation in a new light and reveals dynamic relationships that at times develop in unexpected ways. It also offers new revelations on the relationship between Benedict XV, his Secretary of State, Pietro Gasparri, and the other cardinals.
