A new green park is being developed in the west of Malta between Imqabba and Qrendi, transforming an old quarry site into a recreational space for families and young people. The Mitħna Park project, covering over 7,400 square metres, is being implemented by Project Green in collaboration with the local councils, with an investment of €2 million co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Announcing the project on site, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli said the initiative will give residents a new green space just minutes from their homes. “For years, residents knew this area as ‘the barriers’. Through this project, we are introducing a beautiful open space to be enjoyed by local families,” she said.

The park will feature eco-roof canopies, a rainwater harvesting system, an amphitheatre, a pond, and play areas inspired by nature, along with over 100 new trees and 500 shrubs. Project Green COO Beverley Costa explained that rainwater will be collected for irrigation, promoting sustainability.

Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said the project shows how EU funding “translates into real benefits for families and communities,” adding that the government continues to invest in greener, more accessible public spaces across Malta.
