The Office of the Principal Permanent Secretary has announced the creation of a new position within Malta’s Public Service — the Chief AI Officer. The announcement was made by Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana during the MITA conference “Digital Government.” This new role will coordinate “all projects involving artificial intelligence within the public administration,” alongside an AI Governance Group composed of members from various sectors.

Mr Sultana stated that artificial intelligence should not only be a tool but a “force multiplier” that helps the Public Service operate more efficiently. He expressed satisfaction that the upcoming National Budget “will bring artificial intelligence closer to the entire population through free courses and subscriptions to AI services.” He urged public officers to mentor younger employees who are “digital by birth” and eager for innovation.
MITA CEO Emanuel Darmanin stressed continued collaboration between the public sector and MITA, highlighting Malta’s positive results in European indices. He noted that through digitalisation, “we can make Malta’s Public Administration a model of excellence… not only at a European level, but also internationally.”
